After hearing bell hooks speak on campus a few days ago, I’ve been thinking more and more about feminism and media. Of the many observations she made about pop culture and the media in general, she made a comment about the implications of Twilight. Specifically she didn’t like the way Bella chose Edward, a boy she barely knew) over her family.

I didn’t think about that when I read the book and I’ve got to say I’m not sure that I agree with that sentiment. What’s wrong with the age-old plotline of falling for the bad boy?

She did make some other observations that I thought were very insightful. For instance in Slumdog Millionaire, the girl gets beat up and raped and yet everytime she’s shown in the movie, she looks better and better.

What do you think? What are some other ways pop culture asserts patriarchical views? Are you offended or do you even notice?

This is what I’ve been doing between reading journal articles and writing.

The concept seemed easy, make a bowl of magazines. I got the idea from a friend on Facebook would made one (and did a much better job). You start by making 1 inch wide strips of magazine pages that you roll. The base turned out okay but I’m not pleased with the sides.

Cool idea, though.
